The art of kantha embroidery originated in rural Bengal, where women layered old sarees and dhotis together and stitched them with colored thread from the border of one of the garments. Kantha means “embroidered quilt” in Bengali. The stitching consists of embroidered patterns, ranging from simple floral motifs to elaborate scenes.
Today, the art of kantha still serves its functional purpose, but it has also taken on a beautiful form used to add pattern, color, and texture to fabrics. Delicate patterns are first traced onto the cotton saree, and then the pattern is brought to life stitch by stitch.
